The machine arrived quickly and was well packaged (thanks, Amazon). The included instructions are not very detailed, but they cover the basics. I turned to the internet for more in-depth guidance and video tutorials. After a few hours of use, I found myself getting frustrated as well, to the point where I initiated a return. I struggled with getting the thread tension right and experienced numerous bobbin jams—definitely not what you want!
After taking a step back, I did more research online and discovered some tips that significantly improved my experience, allowing me to complete my project successfully with the 4423.
Here are my tips:
I rated this machine 5 stars purely because, at under $100, it’s a fantastic deal. I’d give it 4 stars if it were in the $125-$150 range. It has its flaws, such as overly sensitive foot control (much like my wife!), but it is a well-constructed machine that can manage heavy fabrics with ease. It went through 6 layers of vinyl upholstery and plastic piping without any issues. I found that starting the needle manually on thicker, multi-layered fabrics yielded the best results.
The stitch patterns seemed to work well enough, but I only experimented briefly with them. I mainly used the straight and zig-zag stitches.
One last note: the machine is lightweight, which has its pros and cons. It’s easy to transport, but it can move around when pushing heavy materials through it. I recommend using a rubber mat or, even better, an appropriate table for stability.

All I can say is that I LOVE this machine. It operates almost identically to my mom’s old Singer. Singer has adhered to the principle of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Their basic machines have remained virtually unchanged over the past 50 years. While they may look different now, that’s just cosmetic. They do have advanced models, but even those are built on the foundation of their reliable machines. If you encounter a defect, get a replacement right away. Don’t delay in testing out your purchase to confirm it’s in working order, and then blame Singer if it doesn’t function properly. Every manufacturer can produce a defective item that slips through quality control. It’s up to the buyer to ensure they receive a fully functional product. Nowadays, sewing machines are much more affordable, so even if one does break down, replacing it won’t be a financial burden. Years ago, some machines I considered were priced around $1,000! Be thankful you’re not paying that much for the junk I’ve been using, which cost me $850 and had no more features than my new purchase!
And for beginners: yes, there’s a manual, and it’s easy to learn. Even without it, anyone with minimal experience can understand how to use the various features because they are clearly labeled. If someone is having trouble, it’s likely because they haven’t used a simple machine like a Singer.
I’ve only had this machine for a short time, but even if I encounter some issues, it would have to be a significant problem to compare to the nightmare of my previous machine. I really wish I had convinced my mother to give me her old Singer sooner! The color may be different, but it feels like I’ve got the same machine.
